There is, in nature, an invisible, yet very real and definite line above which you will rarely, if ever, find a snake. Early settlers in America referred to this line as “the snake line”. Often, when they were purchasing a property, they would ask the seller whether or not the property was above “the snake line.”
Just as the Lord has drawn an invisible line in the mountains which the snakes can’t pass, I believe there is also a spiritual “snake line”
We know that the Bible refers to the devil as a serpent or a snake in Genesis ch 3:1 it was here that Paradise was Lost in an instant because of his lies and deceit.
Every unbeliever lives below the snake-line. The lowland is a dangerous place of sin, of spiritual poverty, weariness, exhaustion, and collapse, hopelessness, sorrow, confusion, and pain. It is a place of broken hearts, shattered dreams, ruined relationships, and troubled minds. But because of what Christ accomplished on the cross we no longer need to live in his gloomy, murky world
In Colossians 1:13-14 we read
“For he has rescued us out of the darkness and gloom of Satan’s kingdom and brought us into the Kingdom of his dear Son”
Because of the curse of God the snake will always slither on its belly in the dirt, that is his comfort zone and that’s where he wants to keep us. The devil wants to pull us down but God is the lifter of our heads.
I once heard a little girl talking to her mum saying “Mom, I know why flowers grow……because they want to get out of the dirt”.
That desire to “get out of the dirt” dwells in the heart of every child of God. We want to live higher because we know Him!
We know where “the snake line” is. And we know where the Lord wants us to be. Sadly so often we choose to live below the lofty place we have been invited to in Christ
I once read about a pilot in World War II who took off from one of the Pacific islands but a little while after take-off, he heard a scratching noise coming from somewhere in his plane. He soon realized that it was a rat. The pilot knew that the rat would eventually chew through something important and cause the plane to crash, but he soon thought of a way of stopping it.
Pulling back on the stick, he guided his plane straight up into the air, aiming directly toward the sun. Higher and higher the plane climbed into the sky. Soon, the plane reached an altitude where there was very little oxygen. In a moment, the chewing stopped. When the pilot had landed, he found the dead body of the rat. The solution to the problem was altitude. The solution to our sin problem is also altitude of a spiritual kind.
Set your face toward the Son of God and climb ever higher. Live in Heavenly Places with HIM.
