In this busy world we find it hard just to slow down and linger in the presence of God.
To linger means to stay in a place longer than is necessary, because of a reluctance to leave.
Do you remember what it was like when you first fell in love. Time wasn’t important, you just wanted to be near that one person, saying goodbye was so hard to do because the value you placed on just being with your beloved was so high. So it can be in our relationship with God.
Just linger, sit with Him - even without words and just enjoy Him.
Linger because the only agenda on your heart is to know Him and be with Him.
I have always been fascinated by the relationship Enoch, Abraham and Moses had with God. Abraham was called “The Friend of God.” Could there ever be a greater honour or pleasure given to a man or woman?
Moses would enter the Tent of meeting and God would speak to him there “face to face", just as a man speaks to his friend” Exodus 33:11
But there is a second part to that same verse that we just might miss which says “When Moses returned to the camp the young man who assisted him….stayed behind (in the tent)” Joshua truly knew how to linger in Gods presence, not to rush away. No wonder God chose him to be Moses' replacement after his death.
Doesn’t your heart just ache with a longing to stay that close and connected to Him?
We all know the story of Mary and Martha, how Martha was so pre-occupied with the tasks of “ministry” that she didn’t make time to linger at Jesus’ feet like Mary.
Luke 10:42 "Jesus said to her, there is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it – and I won’t take it away from her”
What is your one thing? What do you long for more than anything else?
Stay in the tent! Linger longer!
Nothing is as precious in your day as the moments you linger with Him.
Psalm 27:4-6 The Passion Translation
4 Here’s the one thing I crave from God, the one thing I seek above all else: I want the privilege of living with Him every moment in His house, finding the sweet loveliness of His face, filled with awe, delighting in his glory and grace. I want to live my life so close to Him that He takes pleasure in my every prayer. 5–6 In his shelter in the day of trouble, that’s where you’ll find me, for He hides me there in his holiness. He has smuggled me into his secret place, where I’m kept safe and secure— out of reach from all my enemies.
